On June 1, AMCHAM members in Johor had the opportunity to meet with Juha P. Salin, Counselor for Economic Affairs, and Francis “Chip” Peters, Senior Commercial Officer, U.S. Embassy in Kuala Lumpur at the Renaissance Hotel Johor.

It was a very interactive session with members as they shared their insights on current issues affecting the manufacturing sector. Thank you to the representatives from the U.S. Embassy Kuala Lumpur for making the time to hear out our members’ concerns.

AMCHAM held its members briefing on June 1st, these briefings were usually held on the first Wednesday of each month. Now that the lockdowns have ceased and the country is opening up, AMCHAM will be phasing out the hybrid events and conducting more in-person events.

Our CEO Siobhan Das updated on the recent initiatives from the Chamber and what to expect in the coming months. She also shared with members her recent trip to the U.S. – the engagements she had there with member companies, participation in the 2022 Semiconductor Roundtable discussion and the launch of the U.S.-led Indo-Pacific Economic Framework for Prosperity (IPEF), providing insight into what are the areas of focus in the IPEF.

Michael Newbill, Charge D’Affaires of the U.S. Embassy in Kuala Lumpur also provided updates on the U.S. side and expanded on the IPEF.

On 1 June 2022, AMCHAM hosted the U.S. Customs Border and Protection (CBP) leadership for an industry briefing and Q&A session at the AMCHAM Executive Office. The U.S. CBP delegation to Malaysia was led by John P. Leonard, Deputy Executive Assistant Commissioner and together with the Executive Director for Trade Remedy Law Enforcement, Eric Choy.

The delegation shared Malaysia-specific concerns of forced labour, transhipment and anti-dumping to the crowd of 50 in-person attendees, who came from various industries such as E&E, rubber gloves and rubber products, food, furniture, agriculture, etc. Thank you to our fellow Chamber and trade association partners for disseminating this program to the other industry players.

AMCHAM is grateful to the U.S. CBP for providing AMCHAM with the opportunity to host an interactive session with Malaysian manufacturers and exporters who are exporting or looking into exporting to the United States. AMCHAM is committed to enhancing the good working relationship with the U.S. CBP as Malaysian exports to the U.S. continue to increase yearly and facilitate issues around trade enforcement and facilitation.

In November 2019, the Federal Court’s decision in Ang Ming Lee & Ors v Menteri Kesejahteraan Bandar, Perumahan dan Kerajaan Tempatan & Anor and other appeals (AML) upended the housing development industry. Overnight, housing developers were potentially liable for monumental Liquidated Ascertained Damages (LAD) claims. The Federal Court held that the Controller of Housing (Controller)’s power under Regulation 11(3) of the Housing Development Regulations 1989 (HDR) was ultra vires of the Housing Development Act 1966 (HDA).
