Malaysia’s electronics and electrical industry sector is recognized as the bedrock of the country’s economic progress. The industry constantly evolves to adapt to new challenges, developments and technologies.

On January 19, the U.S.-based Semiconductor Industry Association was in Malaysia to meet government ministers and industry and trade leaders to brief them on latest developments on the semiconductor front.

AMCHAM organized a special briefing Enabling Technologies and the Opportunity for Malaysia for its members to better understand the challenges impacting the E&E sector and related industries. They heard how emerging technologies, being central to managing tomorrow’s industrial challenges, could offer opportunities to Malaysian companies. They heard how talent would be crucial to enhance productivity and innovation while attracting foreign investments.

MIDA’s Deputy CEO for Investment Promotion & Facilitation, S. Siva Sundara Raja delivered the keynote address and illustrated where Malaysia stood in emerging technologies, setting the stage for the panel discussion.

The discussion featured SIA’s VP, Global Policy Jimmy Goodrich, IBM Malaysia, Director – Government and Regulatory Affairs Hasnul Nadzrin Shah, and PriceWaterhouseCoopers Executive Director Taxation Services Aurobindo Ponniah who shared insights into current industry landscape, the importance of talent, and policies required to create and support emerging new technologies like AI, autonomous vehicles and high speed computing.

On Jan 17, AMCHAM hosted two informative sessions for our members in Penang: The Export Administration Regulations (EAR) & Its Implications to Malaysian Operations with Nathan Bush from DLA Piper, and subsequently a roundtable with Senior Representatives from the Semiconductor Industry Association (SIA).

Members had the opportunity to hear detailed information on EAR directly as well as recent developments and updates on policies and issues impacting the semiconductor industry.

As we are very close to the Chinese New Year, we prepared a special Yee Sang session as we transitioned into the evening networking cocktail!

Special thanks to our guests from DLA Piper and SIA for taking the time off your busy traveling schedules to meet and engage with our members in Penang, and many thanks to Dato’ Seri Lee Kah Choon for kindly explaining the meaning of Yee Sang to our foreign friends!

Intel Malaysia has launched the Robotics for University (RoboFun) programme to help varsities build capabilities and ultimately emerge as the core technology and solutions provider for small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the country.

The initiative is in collaboration with Malaysian Investment Development Authority – MIDA, Malaysia Productivity Corporation (MPC) and Scuttle Robotics.

MPC Director General Dato’ Abdul Latif Haji Abu Seman said the RoboFun programme will continue to increase the productivity and competitiveness of Malaysian industries and that this trend will continue in the foreseeable future.

On 16 January, AMCHAM hosted an engagement session with the CEO of Inland Revenue Board of Malaysia (IRB) and his team at AMCHAM Executive Office.

This meeting was an excellent opportunity for our members to meet and raise concerns to the IRB such as the complexities in taxation mechanisms and the policies, and more.

Thank you to the YBhg, Datuk Dr. Mohd Nizom bin Sairi and his team for meeting our many members and addressing their concerns. We look forward to future engagements with you and your team.

On 12 January, AMCHAM held its first event of the year – the 2023 New Year Cocktails at the Blue Tee Sports Bar at MST Golf Arena, The Gardens Mall.

The event was a lively one as members and friends were able to enjoy a networking session over a free flow of canapés, drinks, music, and took part in a lucky draw! We also had a mixologist, Chris Danial, to prepare various cocktails and mocktails for the guests.

Thank you to the team at Blue Tee Sports Bar, MST Golf Arena, for making our event a success. Thank you to Alltech Biotechnology Malaysia Sdn Bhd for sponsoring the drinks and to Chris Danial for being the fantastic mixologist of the evening!
