Google held a groundbreaking ceremony for its first US$2 billion data centre and cloud infrastructure in Elmina Business Park, Selangor.
Google’s US$2 billion investment in its new data centre and cloud region in Malaysia is projected to generate US$3.2 billion in gross domestic product (GDP) growth and create 26,000 high-skilled jobs over the next five years, said Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz.
Malaysia’s Finance Minister II, Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan, in his keynote address announced the financial incentive package for the Forest City Special Financial Zone (“FCSFZ”) on 20 September 2024.
Forest City, dubbed as the ‘Jewel of the South’, is strategically located on four reclaimed islands in the Straits of Johore between the State of Johore and Singapore and has been declared a duty free zone recently.
To develop the FCSFZ into a preferred regional financial hub similar to Shenzhen in China and the Dubai International Financial Centre in the United Arab Emirates, the Finance Minister II announced a number of tax incentives

On 5 September 2024, Malaysia’s Ministry of Transport (‘MOT’) published the Malaysia Aviation Decarbonisation Blueprint¹ (‘Aviation Blueprint’). The aviation sector has undergone rapid growth over the years in order to meet increasing demand, and this has certainly become more evident in these post-pandemic times.
However, as a major contributor to carbon emissions, this sector has at the same become a challenge to the country’s goal to be carbon neutral by year 2050. To that end, the Aviation Blueprint represents Malaysia’s strategy with regards to managing the carbon footprint of the aviation sector, with the overarching objective of driving sustainable development.
