Standard Chartered is pleased to present the first Sustainability Summary for Standard Chartered Malaysia. As the nation’s first and oldest Bank, established in Penang 143 years ago, Standard Chartered Malaysia takes pride in their solid foundation and remain committed to Malaysia. They are focused on delivering for their clients and communities and have clearly set out their commitment to society – seeking to be a force for good, promoting sustainable economic and social development in Malaysia. Sustainability is integrated into how Standard Chartered Malaysia does business. It guides everything they do, from the services they provide to their clients, to the way they run their Bank and support the local communities in which they live and work.

The Sustainability Summary showcases some of the sustainability and community achievements, and their approach focuses on three areas:

  • Contributing to the sustainable economic growth
  • Being a responsible company
  • Investing in communities.

Highlights of their local achievements include 41% of women in senior management; 8,090 employee volunteer days in 2017; reaching out to over 6,000 primary school students under Bank Negara’s Buku Wang Saku programme;  contributing 1,870 intraocular lenses worth RM412,000 to underprivileged cataract patients through the Standard Chartered Foundation; and the 9th year of sponsorship for the Standard Chartered KL Marathon.

The Sustainability Summary provides details of the group’s performance of its focus areas, or pillars,  in relation to its aspirations and targets under each pillar, and aligning to the Sustainable Development Goals.

Of the fresh water people use every year, about 70 percent goes to produce the food we eat. At Cargill, we’re taking steps to manage our water resources efficiently by conserving water, improving water quality and ensuring access to clean water in the communities where we operate.

Our actions include:

  • Conserving water – We are working across our supply chains and within our own operations to conserve and improve water quality. We minimize minimizing water use, particularly in areas of stress and scarcity, and improving water quality in areas impacted by agriculture. We conduct local assessments and map our plants and supply chains to determine our long-term risk and take appropriate action. We work to improve freshwater efficiency in our facilities around the world. Our progress includes improving efficiency in our operations by 12 percent between 2005 and 2015. In 2015, we set a new target to improve by another 5 percent by 2020.
  • Improving water quality through sustainable agriculture – We are improving water quality in areas impacted by agriculture. We work with farmers to optimize use of fertilizer and other inputs to maximize yields, reduce runoff and protect watersheds.
  • Promoting access to clean water – We promote access to clean water in communities where we live and work. In areas where we have operations in remote or sensitive locations, we install wastewater treatment technology to protect local water sources.
