Economic Outlook: Understanding the Impact of COVID-19 on the Economy

Join us as we host a special presentation by the Group Chief Economist/Head of Research of AmBank who will dive into the current economic impact of COVID-19 in Malaysia.

Following the trade war between the US and China in 2019, the world today is being hit by the COVID-19 pandemic. It has disrupted global supply chain, dragged global demand down and a surge in job losses, all within a short span of few months, as opposed to the 2008 Global Financial Crisis. Malaysia, being a trading nation, is also being impacted from this virus pandemic. Just like the global economy which will be in recession, probably the worst since the 1930s, the domestic economy is also expected to be in recession in 2020.

Underpinned by the current challenging environment which remains uncertain as well as unpredictable, the downside risk on the economy remains high. To worsen, is the domestic challenges. Hence, relief measures have been introduced with the RM260 billion stimulus package, and now heading for recovery and reforms. What will be the new normal after COVID-19 be? Should the economy be overzealous with GDP growth targets? Will there be a change to the trade dynamics?
