To encourage the volunteerism spirit among colleagues, Pfizer Malaysia launched an on-going Pfizer Gives Back initiative earlier this year in partnership with Kechara Soup Kitchen to serve and help the less fortunate individuals. Under the Pfizer Gives Back initiative, Kechara Soup Kitchen is selected as the main partner while the branch colleagues are given the liberty to select a charity of their choice within their state.

In the span of 6 months, more than 150 Pfizer employees have put approximately 70 hours collectively to reach out to the less fortunate community. Some of the activities carried out by Pfizer employees include cooking in the kitchen, food delivery, health screening, donations and other charitable activities.

Under the Pfizer Gives Back umbrella, branch colleagues also reached out to Pusat Jagaan Kebajikan Kanak- Kanak Budimas Orion; Fungates Soup Kitchen; Need to Feed the Need; Peace and Harmony Home to deliver the kind deeds.

Counterfeit medicines continue to be a serious issue in Malaysia. According to the Emerging Markets Health Network, counterfeit medicines constitute approximately 5% of total medicines in Malaysia. It is quite a high number as compared to the more industrialized countries; the incidence of counterfeit medicines is estimated to be less than 1% of total market, whereas in emerging markets the incidence rate is estimated to range from 10 to 30%.

Among the various channels of the counterfeit medicines, online pharmacies are one of the main contributors to the problem as 95.6% of online pharmacies are operating illegally, over 90% of online pharmacies supply prescription-only medicines without prescription, and 67% of men who purchase prescription-required erectile dysfunction (ED) medicines without a prescription do so via the internet .

In June 2016, Pfizer Malaysia in partnership with Ministry of Health, Malaysian Pharmaceutical Society & Malaysian Urological Association launched a public awareness campaign – Spot the Fake to educate the public on the dangers of counterfeit medicines.

The Spot the Fake campaign is a 360 campaign with both on-ground and on-line engagements to drive awareness so that the public seeks the right channels for genuine medicines. The website also aims at educating them on the dangers of counterfeit medicines and how to “Spot the Fake” by using the various strategies outlined in the site.

Counterfeit medicines are a serious public health threat, since they can contain harmful ingredients such as talc, lactose, sucrose chalk, printer ink, commercial grade paint and even drywall. High levels of toxic solvents and impurities which are residuals of the manufacturing process are also found in those spurious drugs. It is because most of the manufacturing facilities are operating under the radar of regulatory bodies. The result of using counterfeits can be serious, not only damaging victims’ health, but also at times leading to fatalities.

Kuala Lumpur, 17 November 2016 – Ms. Shirley Lai, the Group General Manager of both Fraser Place Kuala Lumpur & Fraser Residence Kuala Lumpur was awarded the HAPA General Manager of the Year – The Ambassador of Hospitality recently. The award was presented to Ms. Shirley Lai, during the grand HAPA Regional 2016 – 2018 Series Awards Presentation & Gala Masquerade Night which was held in Kuala Lumpur.

It was an exciting and memorable moment for Fraser Place Kuala Lumpur as it is the very first HAPA award won by this award-winning property. Ms Lai was thrilled and overwhelmed as she received the prestigious award. This outstanding recognition was based on a 90% benchmark score set by the HAPA Judging and Audit committee.

“I am overwhelmed by this Award and would like to thank all my bosses and team mates for having allowed me the opportunity to excel in my areas of work and responsibility. I am fully committed and passionate of my role and will continue to perform my utmost best for the hospitality industry”, said Ms Lai.

Ms Lai is a high-profiled hotelier who holds a solid background both regionally and

internationally with 38 years of hospitality experiences. She is also backed with a Higher Professional Diploma in Management from University of Cambridge International (UK) and an MBA in Tourism & Hospitality Management from Tourism Institute of Australia.

HAPA organized by World Asia Publishing (M) Sdn Bhd, aims to elevate the overall quality and service standards of Asian hospitality. HAPA’s recognition is based on benchmark scores set by the HAPA committee where those that meets and exceeds the benchmark will be recognized. The year 2016 marks a great achievement for HAPA as it celebrates its 13th Anniversary. HAPA Regional Awards has been a key event in the hospitality industry in Malaysia and Singapore, and in 2008, included properties and personalities from Indonesia and Thailand.

Since the birth of HAPA in 2002, its founder, Jennifer Ong, has always maintained the need for the hospitality industry to show its charitable side. Each year, a selected charity foundation is named as the beneficiary of the HAPA Awards Series. The recipient this year is the National Cancer Society of Malaysia in support of the University Malaysia Medical Centre and Hospital Kuala Lumpur for cancer children.

The HAPA Awards Series has created a platform for the industry to benchmark and improve themselves in line with the industry trends and new challenges, and ultimately enhancing the levels of service among hospitality practitioners.
