JA Malaysia recently conducted its first AGM for the year 2016/2017. Since the organization became a separate legal entity on 25th April 2016, we have grown in the number of programs while our student reach has also grown to more than 20,000 students in from various states in Malaysia. The chairman, Mr. Stuart Dean expressed his appreciation as the team at JA Malaysia have done an excellent job transitioning from being an organization under AMCHAM to a separate entity. He said “It has been a great year with new Sponsors and grants coming our way and we look forward to grow as an organization.”
JA Malaysia saw an increase in the student reach this year which was vastly due to the Cha-Ching Curriculum which is a financial literacy program sponsored by Prudence Foundation. The Cha-Ching Curriculum has managed to penetrate into 5 states namely Wilayah Persekutuan, Putrajaya, Penang, Perak and Selangor. With the help of the state education office we have seen the involvement of approximately 18,000 primary school students in this program. On the other hand, more than 700 students took part in The Young Enterprise (YE) program. The program runs in the Northern and Central Region. Over the years, this program managed to provide practical knowledge on entrepreneurship and business to Form 4 students.
Among other programs in 2017, the FedEx Express International Trade Challenge (ITC), JA More Than Money and JA Pathways to Employment were also high-impact programs that had a positive impact on the students in Malaysia.
The ever-growing team at JA Malaysia looks forward to more financial literacy programs in the coming year and are excited to work with new sponsors and organizations to expand the student reach throughout the country.
On 11th October 2017, the Northern Region Young Enterprise (YE) Program conducted the YE Annual Showcase. It was held at the Main Hall, Universiti Sains Malaysia as students and their corporate sponsors came together to showcase the products that they have created. At the event, various achievement awards were given to the schools. Among the awards were the Best Managed YE Company, Best Annual Report Award, Most Innovative Product and many more.
From the start of this competition, the 14 student companies from the Northern YE Region were judged on how they managed their company, how they developed their product and how they handled problems throughout the competition. For 2017, SMK Perempuan St.George who is sponsored and supported by Keysight Technologies won the Best Managed Company. Best Annual Report and Most Innovative Product were won by SMK Perempuan Methodist and SMK St. Xavier sponsored by IHS Markit and Federal Express Services respectively.
Prior to the Annual Showcase, students had an interview session with industry experts and were judged on various aspects and criterions of the program. Students were interviewed on how they managed their student companies and how they worked as a team to solve problems and think critically about product innovation. On 25th October 2017, 6 student companies from the Central Region YE program had their YE Best Company Interview. Students were excited and enthusiastic for the interview session as the judges, Mr. Kalai Ponniah, Assistant Vice President – Malaysian Operation from Upper Iowa University and Mr. Lee Jiun Ying, Advisory – Performance Improvement, Ernst & Young were impressed with the students.
We at JA Malaysia would like to Congratulate the students, teachers and Corporate Sponsors of the Northern Region YE Program on their achievements as all their hard work and effort throughout the nine months have paid off. More importantly, we are positive that the students have learned a little more about entrepreneurship and business from this program and we would like to wish students from the Northern and Central Region the best as we look forward to 2018.

AMCHAM, LOOKING AHEAD TO 2018
2017 was a remarkable year for the Chamber. We were able to successfully advance the interest of our members and realize some important achievements in regulatory areas such as the Foreign Exchange Administration Rules, GST, and of course the recently-announced Withholding Tax reprieve.
Furthermore, we have been able to undertake productive discussions with the Honorable Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib Bin Tun Haji Abdul Razak, Prime Minister of Malaysia; Dato’ Sri Mustapa Mohamed, Minister of International Trade and Industry (MITI); Datuk Seri Haji Johari Abdul Ghani, Minister of Finance II; Datuk Muhammad Ibrahim, Governor of Bank Negara; and Dato’ Seri Hj Mustafar Hj Ali, Director General of the Immigration Department of Malaysia. These high-level engagements are a testament to the growing visibility and credibility of the Chamber.
We will be continuing our constructive engagement with the Government of Malaysia over the coming year on a number of key issues, including but not limited to the implementation of the Employment Insurance System (EIS) and new legislation around the digital economy, outsourcing, and manufacturing licenses. For early 2018 we have already planned meetings with Minister of Finance II Datuk Seri Haji Johari Abdul Ghani for an Economic Outlook 2018 and with Minister of Human Resources Dato’ Sri Richard Riot to proactively discuss the implementation of EIS and other labor-oriented programs.
This year, we intend to provide greater value to our Members by developing new committees and delivering an expanded program of interactive public/private dialogue events. In particular, we will be developing more programs in the Northern Region including half-day forums to build upon the success of our most recent Penang Dialogue. We hope that you and your staff will take the opportunity to extract additional value from the Chamber, and we welcome and encourage your input to help shape these upcoming programs.
2018 marks the Chamber’s 40th Anniversary which we will be celebrating throughout the year. We are also very excited to have been invited to host the APCAC 2018 Business Summit in Kuala Lumpur on April 4-5, 2018. This annual conference brings together corporate leaders from 20+ American Chambers in the Asia Pacific Region along with senior government officials from the region and from the US.
As the Cha-Ching Curriculum is coming to an end in Malaysia, JA Malaysia has been actively involved with school monitoring. In the last month, we visited schools in Penang, Selangor and Kuala Lumpur namely SK Mutiara Perdana, SJKT Bukit Mertajam, SK Bukit Kuchai and SK Menjalara. It has been an eventful month of monitoring to ensure that teachers are rolling out the program effectively in their respective schools. From our monitoring, this teacher driven program, sponsored by Prudence Foundation, have been very successful thus far in educating children on financial literacy and the basics of money management. The teachers have also expressed their enthusiasm to the benefits of the Cha-Ching Curriculum to their students. With all this positive feedback, JA Malaysia looks forward to a successful and productive implementation of this program in 2018.
AMCHAM’s Board has voted to increase SME fees to RM5000 for annual membership; moving forward, AMCHAM will no longer differentiate Large Members from SME Members and will be identified as Corporate Members.
This move is being made to recognize that all members are equal participants and beneficiaries of the work and representation of the Chamber.
New applications and 2018 fees will, therefore, be reflected as Corporate: RM5000 (excluding GST 6%). There are no changes to the Individual / Non-Resident fees which will remain at RM1000 (excluding GST 6%).
Please note that there will be no change in fee for both the Malaysian American Electronics Industry (MAEI) & Malaysian Alternative And Renewable Industry (MARI) committees. The fee will remain at RM3,000 (inclusive of 6% GST)
Special Offer to our ‘soon-to-be-former’ SMEs
To ease the transition, AMCHAM is offering an ‘early bird’ promotion whereby any existing SME member that can pay their 2018 fees in advance of 2 January 2018, will be eligible for a 30% discount on their 2018 fees: RM 3500 (excluding GST 6%).
Should you wish to renew your membership with this offer, please send us a note at [email protected] and Kevin Roch will send you the appropriate invoice. Please note that if monies are not received by 2 January 2018, the invoice will be re-issued for the full 2018 amount RM 5000.
Thank you for your continued support and for the confidence that you have placed in us. We value your membership and look forward to growing as one in 2018.
