AMCHAM’s first major event of 2018 took place on Monday 05 February as we welcomed Datuk Seri Haji Johari Abdul Ghani, Minister of Finance II, to meet with over 60 of our members at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in a closed-door Q+A session with our members.
After a short private meeting with AMCHAM Board Members and key corporate sponsors, the Minister spoke freely and candidly on a wide range of topics including Malaysia’s economic trajectory over 2018, the strengthening of the Ringgit, challenges involved in taxing the digital economy, and the government’s future direction on healthcare and foreign labor provisions.
The session proved informative and, at times, humorous for our attendees. AMCHAM is delighted to have this type of top-level engagement from the Ministry and looks forward to collaborating on a series of contemporary issues over the coming year.
Our thanks to Datuk Seri Haji Johari Abdul Ghani and his team for taking the time to attend this important dialogue event.
AMCHAM hosted an industry-specific luncheon with a visiting official from Washington D.C. – Mr. John McCarrick, Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Department of State’s Bureau of Energy Resources on February 7. Mr. McCarrick took the time to meet with our members in the Oil & Gas sector to share insights into energy trends and forecasts for Malaysia, Asia-Pacific, and the US. Our thanks to the US Embassy in Kuala Lumpur for facilitating the meeting.
AMCHAM was pleased to have Johan Merican, Deputy Director General (Human Capital) & Head of TN50 Special Unit-CSDU Economic Planning Unit in the Prime Minister Department for the briefing of The ROI of TN50 on February 8, 2018.
Transformasi Nasional 2050 (TN50) is a Government initiative aimed at charting Malaysia’s future for the next 30 years by gathering the aspirations of fellow Malaysians across the country, across various sectors and segments of the populations with the goal that Malaysia will become a top 20 nation in economic development, citizen well-being and innovation by 2050.
Johan briefed extensively on TN50 as a continuation of the nation’s development whereby it promises a bottom up process of engagement for Malaysians, in the hope that it will lead to a more holistic approach in driving the way forward for Malaysia. He also welcomed everyone to share its views and ideas to jointly set its objectives for the nation’s future.
We were grateful for the opportunity to have the Head of TN50 Special Unit himself to brief our members and to have an open discussion as many were not familiar with TN50.
AMCHAM would like to thank Johan for briefing our members and most importantly for providing them with sufficient information prior to the implementation of TN50 in the near future.
