Minister of International Trade & Industry Y.B. Datuk Darell Leiking conducted a closed-door discussion with around 40 AMCHAM members on Wednesday 28 November on the theme of “New Malaysia’s Competitive Future”. He reiterated the government’s focus on collaborating with multinational corporations (MNCs) to achieve ‘shared prosperity’, and shared some insights on the Ministry’s direction around RCEP and CPTPP.

AMCHAM enjoys a strong day-to-day working relationship with MITI, and will continue to work alongside the Ministry to ensure that the New Malaysia can leverage the country’s strategic advantages and position Malaysia as a preferred investment destination not just for the domestic market but to serve ASEAN and global supply chains.

The American Malaysian Chamber of Commerce (AMCHAM) celebrated 22 of its member companies for demonstrating best practice in the implementation of corporate citizenship or corporate social responsibility (CSR) projects in Malaysia.  Corporate citizenship and responsible business practices are some of the hallmarks of U.S. corporate culture and are firmly embedded in the activities of American companies across all countries in which they are located.

AMCHAM is proud to play its part in advancing the field of corporate citizenship. MY AMCHAM CARES is a mutual learning platform for AMCHAM’s member companies that aims to encourage the proliferation of impactful and sustainable corporate citizenship programs throughout Malaysia. Programs implemented by AMCHAM members cover a broad range of social and environmental objectives, with access to quality healthcare and education featuring prominently.

Executive Director of AMCHAM, Siobhan Das said, “The MY AMCHAM CARES program started in 2016 by sharing our members successful CSR campaigns. The following year, this grew into a benchmarking effort assessing ‘how’ our members planned and implemented their initiatives using an annual survey and, in turn, recognizing their excellence. We are very pleased with how far MY AMCHAM CARES program has come since then.”

President of AMCHAM, Ramzi Toubassy said, “Through the MY AMCHAM CARES program we are able to better understand the CSR approach our member companies take, and by sharing best practices, companies are able to learn from each other and improve corporate citizenship in Malaysia.”

The MY AMCHAM CARES’ annual survey benchmarks members’ corporate citizenship and CSR initiatives across four key pillars: Strategy, Measurability, Sustainability, and Communication. The 22 companies who had high scores across these pillars this year are as follows:

Gibraltar BSN Life Berhad (“Gibraltar BSN”), Malaysia’s Community Protection Champion, recently donated a cabin that will be used to hold therapy sessions for abused and neglected kids placed at a SHELTER Home 3 in Petaling Jaya.

Started off in 1981 by a group of seven friends, SHELTER Home for Children houses and rehabilitates abused, abandoned, neglected or at-risk children around the Klang Valley. Amongst their three homes in Petaling Jaya, only ‘Shelter Home 3’ did not have a spare room for one-on-one therapy, which was why Gibraltar BSN decided to commission the building of a therapy cabin for the children.

President and Chief Executive Officer at Gibraltar BSN Life Berhad, Rangam Bir said, “We believe that each and every child has the right to good health and well-being which is one of the United Nations’ Sustainable Goals, and this is why we chose to support SHELTER Home this year. We are proud to rise and meet the needs of the community that we operate in by providing the therapy cabin that will make a real difference in the lives of these young children.”

The event saw 20 volunteers from Gibraltar BSN, along with President and CEO Rangam Bir, painting the therapy cabin, planting greenery surrounding it to promote serenity, and playing a friendly futsal match with the children to promote an active lifestyle.

To further complement Gibraltar BSN’s CSR initiative, lunch for the volunteers and children were catered from The Picha Project, a social enterprise which aims to empower refugees in Malaysia through a sustainable food catering and delivery business.
