Investment Promotion Agencies (IPAs) across the country will continue working closely with state governments to ensure that local industries in each state are not adversely affected by the United States (US) tariff issue.

Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz said the government’s establishment of the National Geoeconomic Command Centre (NGCC) would play a key role in monitoring, evaluating, and coordinating responses to shifts in the global trade landscape, including tariff shocks and non-tariff barriers.

“This effort aims to ensure that the country’s strategic and economic industries remain resilient and competitive in an increasingly challenging and uncertain global environment,” he said in the Dewan Rakyat, responding to a question from Mohd Syahir Che Sulaiman (PN-Bachok).

Mohd Syahir enquired about the government’s steps to address the US tariff issue with the involvement of state governments to coordinate investment responses, restructure state incentives, and help local industries adapt to a more challenging trade environment.

On 17 July, AMCHAM Malaysia hosted a roundtable with the Illinois Department of Commerce & Economic Opportunity (DCEO) at AMCHAM, focused on strengthening commercial engagement between Malaysia and the state of Illinois.

The session featured Ms. Margo Markopoulos and Mr. Kevin Kim from the Illinois DCEO, and was moderated by AMCHAM’s Chairman, Datuk Tim Garland, who led a focused and engaging discussion.

Illinois, the 18th largest economy in the world, plays a pivotal role in U.S. global trade and investment strategy. With its advanced infrastructure, diverse industrial base, and central geographic location, Illinois offers Malaysian companies a highly competitive gateway into the North American market.

The discussion focused on deepening subnational ties and driving collaboration in key sectors such as advanced manufacturing, semiconductors, sustainable fuels, agriculture, and clean technology.

Key points from the session:

  • Illinois exports to Malaysia have increased by over 60% year-on-year, underscoring rising demand for Illinois-origin products.
  • Malaysia remains a critical regional hub for electronics, medical devices, and supply chain diversification.
  • The U.S. is Malaysia’s top supplier of whole soybeans, with over USD 229 million in exports in 2024, supporting key food and poultry industries.
  • Illinois is also driving innovation in quantum computing and sustainable aviation fuel, positioning itself as a hub for advanced technology and investment.

AMCHAM is keen to support deeper bilateral business ties between the United States and Malaysia, while contributing to the development of a resilient, competitive, and innovation-driven Malaysian economy.

We thank the Illinois DCEO delegation and all participants for contributing to a highly productive and forward-looking session.
