KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has sought clarification from the United States over a proposed 100 per cent tariff on imported semiconductor chips, warning that the move risks harming one of the country’s most critical export sectors.

Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz said the government has contacted the US Trade Representative and Department of Commerce this morning to obtain an official statement.

US President Donald Trump has announced plans to impose a 100% import tariff on semiconductors, a move expected to significantly affect the global technology supply chain.

In a press conference at the White House on Wednesday, Trump reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to protecting the domestic technology sector by tightening controls on imported products, particularly semiconductor chips.

“Kami akan mengenakan tarif yang sangat besar ke atas cip dan semikonduktor. Kadar itu akan menjadi 100 peratus,” katanya kepada media.

However, Trump did not provide a specific timeline or further details on when the policy would be implemented.

Minister of Investment, Trade, and Industry (Miti) Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz said Malaysia will have 6,911 lines with zero tariffs following protracted negotiations with their American counterparts.

He said this amounted to 61 per cent of the total 11,260 tariff lines requested by the United States. A tariff line refers to an item listed in a country’s tariff schedule, which is used to classify merchandise goods for the purpose of applying tariffs.

The agreement follows extensive negotiations involving multiple ministries, agencies and stakeholders while ensuring Malaysia’s national policies and strategic interests are not compromised.
