Launch of the Global Investment Competitiveness Report 2019/2020: Rebuilding Investor Confidence in Times of Uncertainty

The COVID-19 outbreak has shaken up the world, creating a period of economic uncertainty. To shed some light on this, the World Bank Group produced a very recent Global Investment Competitiveness Report on ‘Rebuilding Investor Confidence in Times of Uncertainty’. The report was derived from multiple surveys, one being a large survey of over 2,400 global business executives in ten large middle-income countries conducted in the second half of 2019 and a smaller survey in March and April 2020.

For further discussions on the report and the current environment, World Bank Group held a webinar on ‘Rebuilding Investor Confidence in Times of Uncertainty’ on July 10, 2020. This special session brought together panellists from three different countries in Southeast Asia to provide insights on how their countries have dealt with the pandemic in regards to techniques and methods adopted as well as the efforts made to regain investor confidence. The three panelists were Rafaelita M. Aldaba, Undersecretary for Competitiveness and Innovation Group (CIG), Department of Trade and Industry of the Philippines, Ratchanee Wattanawisitporn, Executive Director, Foreign Investment Marketing Division, The Board of Investment of Thailand, and Siobhan Das, Chief Executive Officer, AMCHAM Malaysia.

A very big thank you to World Bank Group for organizing this session and for inviting AMCHAM’s CEO to elaborate on how Malaysia has handled the pandemic, from mitigating the effects of the outbreak and drawing investment amidst the situation.
