Summary:

The work schedule for this position is

  • Full Time (40 number of hours per week)

Duties

Basic Function of the Position – The Economic Specialist prepares reports, performs research and analysis, maintains contacts, requests and attends meetings, organizes events, and advises on macroeconomic, financial, trade, infrastructure, ICT, cybersecurity, and other economic developments in Malaysia on behalf of Embassy and visiting U.S. officials.  This position backs up, as needed, the Economic Assistant who covers energy, health, environment, and intellectual property issues.

Qualifications and Evaluations

Requirements:

EXPERIENCE:  A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in political or economic research and analysis; reporting on social, political, or economic developments; financial or investment analysis; or business journalism in either the public or private sector.

JOB KNOWLEDGE:  Candidates must be familiar with economic and business practices in the United States and Malaysia.  Qualified candidates should possess a strong understanding of Malaysia’s economic fundamentals, including primary business sectors, governing institutions, and foreign and domestic policies.  Candidates should also understand the role of foreign investment and trade in the Malaysian economy.

Education Requirements:

Must have a Bachelor’s degree in Economics, Finance, Political Science, International Relations or Development or Affairs, Public Policy, Business Administration or Journalism.

Evaluations:

LANGUAGE:  English Level 4 (Advanced Proficiency) spoken and written AND Bahasa Malaysia Level 4 (Advanced Proficiency) in spoken and written (this may be tested).

SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Must possess working knowledge of economic trends, conditions, and principles.  Must maintain awareness of economic developments and policy changes within Malaysia.  Must develop and maintain working relationships with a wide range of contacts from the private and public sectors, including federal and state ministries, academia, NGOs, business councils, and U.S. and Malaysian companies.  Must possess strong analytical and English writing skills.  Must demonstrate high degree of ability to organize, plan, and execute events, written reports, spreadsheets, and other special projects.  Applicants should be punctual, flexible, collaborative, and team-oriented.
