Sustainability in Business: The Next Asian Revolution

Asia has served as a major driver of global economic growth. The current question is how the region continues its growth to ensure that business activity coexists and even reinforces social progress and environmental protection. At the Fall 2018 TIAA professional development conference in Penang, speakers will bring Asian perspectives into the global debate around sustainability. Specifically, these experts will highlight factors impacting Asian development and explore how business and policymakers can help spur more sustainable growth.

Destination: Malaysia

Known as the Silicon Valley of the East for its industries, including household names such as Intel, Dell, and AMD, Penang is one of Malaysia’s most vital economic powerhouses with the highest Gross Domestic Product per capita among all of Malaysia’s thirteen states. In addition, Penang recorded the nation’s second highest Human Development Index, after the capital Kuala Lumpur. Correspondingly, the state has a relatively well-educated population, with a youth literacy rate of 99.5% as of 2014.

A fascinating fusion of East and West, Penang embraces modernity while retaining its traditions and old world charm. These are reflected in its multicultural and multiracial populace living side-by-side in harmony. In 2008, the state capital of George Town became a designated UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site due to its well-preserved heritage buildings. Long regarded as the street-food capital of Malaysia (or, as the locals claim, “of the world”), Penang entices visitors with its scrumptious cuisines.

Penang’s alluring charms and unique attributes together with its many-faceted cultures and communities make it a favourite of many as a Meetings, Incentives, Conventions & Exhibitions (MICE) destination.  The easy going lifestyle on Penang is a result of the melting pot of cultures, religions and food which have intermingled and coexisted for more than 200 years. The UNESCO World Heritage Site of George Town in particular, offers a total fusion of Chinese, Malay, Indian, Peranakan and other races and traditions, evidence of which is apparent everywhere, from cuisine to festivals and architecture.

The fascinating culture in the historic city centre complemented by golden beaches, tranquil seas, lush verdant hills and lowland forests. One would have to search far and wide to find an island blessed with so much cultural as well as natural heritage. It is a true tropical paradise that offers something for everyone: from foodies, history buffs and nature park enthusiasts to those just wanting to relax on a sun-drenched beach.

George Town

Combine three distinct and ancient cultures, indigenous and colonial architecture, shake for a few centuries, and garnish with some of the best food in Southeast Asia, and you’ve got the irresistible urban cocktail that is George Town. With a long and illustrious history under its belt, Penang’s capital city is one of the most interesting and colourful cities in Malaysia. Named after King George III, walking down the streets of George Town is like walking through the paths of history.

The beauty and rich history of George Town keeps tourists flocking all year round. It offers views of the famous Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion, Kapitan Keling Mosque and many of the capital’s golden crowned Buddhist temples, and museums showcasing the country’s rich-historical treasures, as well as restaurants that offer classic Malaysian cuisine and dozens of shopping malls.  As acknowledgment of its well-preserved cultural and historical heritage, the city was listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO on the 7th of July 2008.
