Launch of PayPal Report “Accelerating SME Digitalization in Malaysia

AMCHAM in collaboration with PayPal will be hosting the Launch of PayPal’s latest report on “Accelerating SME Digitalization in Malaysia” on Tuesday, September 20th, 2022 from 2:30 pm – 4:30 pm (registration starts at 2:00 pm onwards) at the AMCHAM Executive Office. Join us for the inaugural launch of the report and a panel discussion featuring Mr. Fabian Bigar, CEO, MyDIGITAL Corporation, Mr. Gopi Ganesalingam, Senior Vice President of Ecosystem Development, MDEC, Ms. Raeesa Sya, Founder & CEO, Orkid Cosmetics (Halal Cosmetics) & Account Director, Elixus Agency and Mr. Steven Chan, International Head, Government Relations and Public Policy, APAC & LATAM. This session will be moderated by Siobhan Das, CEO, of AMCHAM.
The panel discussion is targeted at business executives, IT professionals, and government officials interested in SME digitalisation in Malaysia, the challenges posed by it, and how the public and private sectors could work together to overcome them.

Summary of Report
Malaysian small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are the backbone of the Malaysian economy, constituting around 97% of all business establishments in the country and employing nearly half of all workers in Malaysia in 2020.
However, during the COVID-19 pandemic, the rapid shift of economic activities to digital channels and e-commerce was a major challenge for many SMEs. This, coupled with the consequent lockdowns across Malaysia, led the Malaysian Government to place digital transformation at the forefront of policy efforts to sustain and develop the Malaysian SME sector, not least because Malaysian businesses also have been lagging behind their international counterparts in digital adoption.
PayPal has conducted a survey of 1,000 SME owners across Malaysia, to examine the digital readiness of Malaysian SMEs, analyse the progress of their digitalisation, assess the impact that digitalisation has had on their ability to sell cross-border, and identify solutions to address challenges as well as to capture new opportunities.
