Malaysia, US discuss trade ties amid tariff uncertainty

Malaysia and the United States have discussed ways to strengthen bilateral trade ties, including ongoing Sections 301 and 232 investigations that could affect Malaysian exports.

Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani said Malaysia hopes any trade measures introduced by the US would take into account the shared interests of both countries.

Such measures should complement their respective economies and support stable and resilient global supply chains, he said in a Facebook post following his working visit to Washington.

Johari said he raised the matter during his maiden bilateral meeting with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.

“I highlighted Malaysia’s strategic role as a trusted trading partner and an important contributor to global supply chains, particularly in high-technology manufacturing,” he said.

Johari said both countries agreed to continue resolving trade-related issues through constructive dialogue, closer engagement and transparent information sharing.
