JP Morgan Platinum Program: Malaysia Economic Outlook

On June 19, AMCHAM was pleased to co-host an exclusive mid-year Economic Outlook with J.P. Morgan Malaysia, bringing together members and invited guests for an insightful evening of discussion and exchange.

Held at the Grand Hyatt Kuala Lumpur, the event focused on how Malaysia is navigating tectonic shifts and adapting to an increasingly complex global economic landscape.

We were honored to welcome Ngai Jin Tik, Senior ASEAN Economist at J.P. Morgan Singapore, who provided an interesting look on Malaysia’s economic position in light of the current global trends such as the tariff actions of the current US administration. He offered valuable regional context drawn from his extensive experience, including previous roles at Khazanah and KWAP.

Following him, Professor Dr. Ong Kian Ming, Former Deputy Minister of MITI and current MIDA Board Member, shed light on local discussions surrounding tariff negotiations and trade policy, leveraging his insights from his former governmental duties.

The evening culminated in a fireside chat moderated by Dato’ Siobhan Das, CEO of AMCHAM, where the speakers, joined by Wong Hooi Ching, CEO of J.P.Morgan Malaysia,  explored the  theme “Navigating Trade Shifts and Strategic Growth”, delving into the impacts of tariffs and exemptions, Malaysia’s positioning in the global economy, and the significance of data centers and their intended client base amidst rapid industry expansion. The conversation also highlighted J.P. Morgan’s 61-year presence in Malaysia and its global perspective on supporting clients through economic transitions.
