SUMMARY:Members' Briefing
DESCRIPTION:AMCHAM hosted our very first Members’ Briefing on April 20th\, 2016 at The Intercontinental Hotel Kuala Lumpur. This new initiative is exclusive to members and presents an opportunity for members to meet senior members from the U.S. Embassy. This month Deputy Chief of Mission\, Edgar D Kagan presented an outlook covering various aspects of local and U.S. issues impacting trade and business. A robust Q&A session followed. \nMr. Kagan spoke about how Malaysia is a significant regional and global partner for the United States; both countries share a diverse and expanding partnership in trade\, investment\, security\, environmental cooperation\, and educational and cultural relations. Key areas highlighted by Mr. Kagan was on the recent signing of the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP)\, the ambitious next generation Asia-Pacific trade agreement and other bi-lateral engagements. Mr. Kagan also spoke about the U.S. engagement with ASEAN under the Obama Administration. The United States is committed to this partnership and continues to deepen and broaden engagement with ASEAN in addition to its individual member states. Mr. Kagan was accompanied by Andrew Herrup\, Counselor for Economic Affairs and Alex Tatsis\, Economic Officer. \nSiobhan Das\, AMCHAM’s new Executive Director briefed members on some of the new initiatives that the Chamber has planned for the year including the issuing of new membership cards; the forming of new member communities based on members interests and issues; and developing programming that reflects the depth of knowledge within our Chamber. \nThe briefing was well attended by our membership of about 40 attendees including Sanjeev Nanavati\, president of AMCHAM\, Datuk Nicholas Zeffreys\, Past President and Board Members\, Ramzi Taboussy\, AmMetLife and Steve Plunkett\, GE. AMCHAM plans to host this briefing on a monthly basis and we would like to encourage all our members to attend this briefing to get to know the Chamber\, U.S. Embassy and other fellow members. \nAMCHAM would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr. Kagan for supporting this event and most importantly we would like to thank our members for your presence in making this event a success.

The event was well attended by both members of AMCHAM and EUMCCI. \nThis event brought together experienced senior practitioners from ASEAN region who contributed their professional insights.\nSome of the areas covered during the briefing was investment incentives for foreign investors to invest in each of the region\, employment and immigration issues and also dealing with the local government. \nAMCHAM would like to thank ZICO Law for inviting us to be a part of this program. SUMMARY:Economic Outlook: A Conversation with The World Bank
DESCRIPTION:Malaysia is in a good place\, The World Bank’s Chief Economist\, Rafael Munoz Moreno\, Senior Economist\, Malaysia\, East Asia and Pacific of The World Bank shared his positive perspective about Malaysia’s economic future on March 16\, 2016. Mr Moreno said that despite the Government’s oil-related revenue decline last year\, GST and subsidy reforms have helped in meeting the Government’s deficit target while lower fuel prices have helped to contain inflation. \nFollowing Mr Moreno’s presentation\, Ms. Angela Mancini\, Managing Director – Southeast Asia of Control Risks\, a seasoned moderator who knew the ropes well to keep the conversation lively by keeping the audience engaged during the Q&A session.   \nThe event was well attended by our membership of about 75 attendees including AMCHAM Board Members. AMCHAM would like to thank Mr Rafael and Ms Angela for their participation in making this event a success.

SUMMARY:BMW Malaysian WTA Open 2016 - Sime Darby Property Networking Evening
DESCRIPTION:AMCHAM together with the Malaysian Dutch Business Council (MDBC) and with 12 other Chamber of Commerce’s and Business Councils jointly organized its Annual Inter-Chamber Networking evening in-conjunction with BMW Malaysian WTA Open on March 1\, 2016. This year’s networking event gathered approximately 200 guests at the elite Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club. \nThe evening began with cocktails and canapes at the International Collection Gallery hosted by Sime Darby\, after which everyone then adjourned to the VIP Skybox for Cocktail & Dinner followed with watching the match between Roberta Vinci of Italy and Kai-Chen Chang of Taiwan. \nThe tournament comprised of top 24 highest ranked players in the entry list. The main highlight of the tournament was Wimbledon’s finalist and World No.32 Sabine Lisicki\, Roberta Vinci\, last year’s U.S. Open finalists; current WTA Tour Champion Elina Svitolina\, Former Wimbledon Finalist and World No. 58 Eugenie Bouchard; and four-time mixed doubles Grand Slam champion and World No. 101 Daniela Hantuchova. \nIn Singles Final\, Elina Svitolina (UKR) beat Eugenie Bouchard (CAN) to win the Singles Championship of the BMW Malaysian Open this year after several match suspensions due to weather conditions which stretched the match past midnight. \nAMCHAM would like to take this opportunity to thank the Malaysian Dutch Business Council (MDBC) for inviting us to be a part of this event yet again this year.

DESCRIPTION:AMCHAM and TalentCorp jointly organized 2 briefings on October 8 and 13\, 2015 exclusively for AMCHAM members to introduce the new Malaysia Expatriate Talent Service Centre (MYXpats Centre). \nMr Siva Kumeren Narayanan\, Head of Foreign Talent Facilitation & Share Services\, conducted the briefing. He covered on the new MYXpats Centre services\, latest updates on Employment Pass (EP) and Residence Pass Talent (RP-T). After the briefing ended\, members were then taken on a Tour to MYXpats processing centre and were guided on the steps of applications done at the centre. \nTalentCorp’s Malaysia Expatriate Talent Service Centre (MYXpats Centre) is a service centre for employers submitting Employment Pass applications and other related immigration passes for their expatriate employees. \nIt is a joint initiative between Talent Corporation Malaysia (TalentCorp) and the Immigration Department of Malaysia\, and is overseen by the Ministry of Home Affairs. The MYXpats Centre is part of the planned enhancement of immigration services by the Government of Malaysia\, which started with the Expatriate Services Division (ESD) in 2014. \nOperational in June 2015 and conveniently located in the Klang Valley\, the MYXpats Centre provides easy access for both employers and expatriates. SUMMARY:MARI: Industry Academia Dialogue
DESCRIPTION:InterContinental Hotel\, Kuala Lumpur – The Malaysian Alternative & Renewable Industry (MARI)\, an active working group under AMCHAM; welcomed leaders from the Solar industry and key academia stakeholders that engaged in a constructive dialogue on furthering Industry Academia Collaborations (IAC). \nChaired by Dato’ P’ng Soo Hong\, VP & Managing Director of First Solar Malaysia\, and Chairman of MARI\, the dialogue began with the sharing of latest updates and current status on human capital development for the Solar industry. The shrinking of Malaysia’s talent pool for the solar industry is a critical concern where creates a direct impact upon the growth of the industry. Malaysian engineers encompass expertise on back end systems but lack device knowledge and front end processing. The average retention rate for talent is captured at 10%\, whereas the efflux pattern of talent migration is increasing. \nThe industry has commented on the hiring experience for fresh graduates include the insufficient competence of presentation\, communication and knowledge demonstration skills. The root cause of this is the lack of wholesome grooming and education in universities where graduates are portrayed to be unready for employment.\nNotable universities such as USM\, UKM\, UniKL\, UniMap & UTeM are committed to continue working towards bettering and developing the engineering curriculums catered for industry needs and requirements. \nTakeaways\n● Technical Symposium 2.0\n● IAC: Companies will embark on more engagements with universities in Northern\, Central and Southern regions\n● Universities are encouraged to be pro-active and engage closely with companies of the solar industry

DESCRIPTION:In conjuntion with ASEAN Economic Minister’s meeting\, AmCham Malaysia and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce jointly organized and inaugurated the U.S.-Malaysia Commercial Relations Conference. We would like to also express our appreciation to the Ministry of International Trade and Industry for supporting and endorsing the conference. Enhancing Economic Integration was the theme of the conference in support of the Malaysian Government’s initiative in facilitating and promoting trade and investment\, particularly through the ASEAN Economic Community Blueprint and the Trans-Pacific Partnership negotiation. The conference was put together to discuss issues close to the heart of the U.S. business community in Malaysia. It also aimed at facilitating a valuable and productive dialogue amongst Malaysian stakeholders to establish better understanding of the economic and commercial opportunities that TPP presents for Malaysian businesses. \nThe highlight of the day was a Keynote Speech by YBhg. Dato Sri Mustapa Mohamed\, Minister of the International Trade & Industry. Following are some highlights of Minister’s speech delivered. \n● ASEAN will stay on course with regional economic integration.\n● ASEAN must expedite the use of IT in facilitating intra-ASEAN trade and investments including addressing trade complaints.\n● ASEAN must continue to deepen economic integration by addressing regulations and promote greater transparency.\n● Last year\, ASEAN attracted US$136 billion in FDIs\, surpassing inflows to China. Intra-ASEAN investments contributed about 20 per cent of that total.\n● ASEAN’s external trade expanded to US$2.53 trillion last year from US$2.51 trillion recorded in 2013. Of this\, about 24 per cent was attributed to intra-ASEAN trade. \nAmCham would like to thank Minister YBhg Dato Sri Mustapa Mohamed for gracing the luncheon. DESCRIPTION:Every year Malaysia takes part in the FedEx International Trade Challenge (ITC) competition\, a program designed to engage young people through the creation of international entry strategy plans. Students gain a firsthand experience of world trade. 27 teams from 9 countries in the Asia Pacific region competed in the challenge. Malaysia sent 3 teams – 1 team from SMK Tun Hussein Onn\, Penang\, and 2 teams from SMK Seafield\, Subang. 6 teams went on to the finals\, and Malaysia was one of the 6. The Winning teams were : 1-New Zealand. 2-Korea 3-Thailand. Malaysia has been awarded to continue with the program for next year.

Andrew Herrup\, Economic Counselor at the U.S. Embassy in Kuala Lumpur\, updated members on the recent developments of U.S. Sanctions on Myanmar. The U.S. Government has waived many economic sanctions on Myanmar from the previous general board restrictions to a more calibrated engagement. Whilst Americans can now invest in Myanmar\, import goods\, and engage in financial transactions with Burmese nationals\, there are however restrictions for the Specially Designated Nationals (SDN) list\, new investment with military/armed groups and related entities\, and certain travel restrictions. Overall the new U.S. Sanctions Policy announced in May 2012 sends a clear signal of support for the reform process and reformers. \nIn addition to updates on the U.S. Sanctions on Myanmar\, Jeremy Tan\, Senior Consultant of Corporate Investigations at Controls Risks (Southeast Asia) provided updates on Myanmar 2015 Investment Outlook. Myanmar continues to be a ideal naiton for investment due to its strategic location between India\, China\, and Southeast Asia as well as its relatively untapped market\, rich natural resources\, and youthful demographics with low labor costs. Key sectors in Myanmar include FMCG\, agribusiness\, infrastructure\, energy\, extractives\, and financial services. DESCRIPTION:Putrajaya – On 26 February 2015\, members of AMCHAM’s Power Quality group\, which includes members of the Malaysian Electrical and Electronics (E&E) industry and representatives of TNB\, met Palm Garden Hotel IOI Resort to discuss on the updates and mitigation plans of Power Quality issues. \nMinutes from the previous meeting was presented which then followed through with updates from TNB on voltage sag incidents from November 2014 up until February 2015. Major causes are lightning\, 3rd party encroachment and customers’ internal faults. Members of TNB gave further updates on action plans to reduce distribution voltage sags for WPKL and Selangor precedent from previous maintenance activities. \nTNB conducted a case by case study for each AMCHAM Power Quality member and sought to provide more pro-active solutions for each company through engaging in more mitigation works as well as continuing working towards minimizing the impact of faulty events.\nTo integrate best practices\, and actively addressing technical issues\, policies and plausible preventive measures\, AMCHAM’s Power Quality Group is an initiative of AMCHAM that provides proximity and direct contact to upper management of TNB. A higher education in the United States cultivated in me this worldview that has been indispensable in tackling the opportunities ahead. I am unreservedly grateful for the learning opportunity that has been afforded to me and wish for no less of this exposure for all students seeking higher education in the United States.”\nEarlier in July\, the American Malaysian Chamber of Commerce (AMCHAM)\, in conjunction with the Malaysian-American Commission on Educational Exchange (MACEE)\, proudly announced the winner of the 2014 AMCHAM-MACEE Scholarship Award\, Roumen Guha.  The Acting Deputy Chief of Mission Kent Stieglerand AMCHAM President Sanjeev Nanavati presented the award to the recipient at AMCHAM’s Executive Office\, before Mr. Guha headed to the U.S. to attend the University of Wisconsin-Madison\, ranked among the top 30 learning institutions in the world by Times Higher Education World Reputation Rankings.\nThe AMCHAM-MACEE Scholarship Award first launched in 2000 and supports competitive and high-achieving Malaysian students in pursuit of American higher education. Every year AMCHAM awards a US$20\,000 scholarship spread over four years to Malaysian students who will be pursuing undergraduate studies in the United States. The scholarship fund is made possible by the generous donations of corporate members as well as from AMCHAM charity events.\nSince its launch\, 15 Malaysian students have been awarded the scholarship. Students have attended universities such as Cornell University\, Yale University\, University of Texas-Austin\, Purdue University\, and University of Virginia\, and majors have included biochemistry\, chemical engineering\, economics\, and political science. Current scholars are attending George Fox\, Furman University\, Union University\, Mt. Holyoke College\, Wesleyan University\, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison. \nAMCHAM\nThe American Malaysian Chamber of Commerce (AMCHAM) was founded in 1978 as an international\, non-profit\, private-sector business association. It comprises nearly 1000 members representing over 350 American\, Malaysian and other international companies. The Chamber is affiliated with the Asia Pacific Council of American Chambers of Commerce (APCAC) and with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce\, which is the largest chamber of commerce in the world.
