SUMMARY:Sustainability in Business: The Next Asian Revolution
DESCRIPTION:Asia has served as a major driver of global economic growth. The current question is how the region continues its growth to ensure that business activity coexists and even reinforces social progress and environmental protection. At the Fall 2018 TIAA professional development conference in Penang\, speakers will bring Asian perspectives into the global debate around sustainability. Specifically\, these experts will highlight factors impacting Asian development and explore how business and policymakers can help spur more sustainable growth. \nDestination: Malaysia\nKnown as the Silicon Valley of the East for its industries\, including household names such as Intel\, Dell\, and AMD\, Penang is one of Malaysia’s most vital economic powerhouses with the highest Gross Domestic Product per capita among all of Malaysia’s thirteen states. In addition\, Penang recorded the nation’s second highest Human Development Index\, after the capital Kuala Lumpur. Correspondingly\, the state has a relatively well-educated population\, with a youth literacy rate of 99.5% as of 2014. \n \nA fascinating fusion of East and West\, Penang embraces modernity while retaining its traditions and old world charm. These are reflected in its multicultural and multiracial populace living side-by-side in harmony. In 2008\, the state capital of George Town became a designated UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site due to its well-preserved heritage buildings. Long regarded as the street-food capital of Malaysia (or\, as the locals claim\, “of the world”)\, Penang entices visitors with its scrumptious cuisines. \nPenang’s alluring charms and unique attributes together with its many-faceted cultures and communities make it a favourite of many as a Meetings\, Incentives\, Conventions & Exhibitions (MICE) destination.  The easy going lifestyle on Penang is a result of the melting pot of cultures\, religions and food which have intermingled and coexisted for more than 200 years. The UNESCO World Heritage Site of George Town in particular\, offers a total fusion of Chinese\, Malay\, Indian\, Peranakan and other races and traditions\, evidence of which is apparent everywhere\, from cuisine to festivals and architecture. \nThe fascinating culture in the historic city centre complemented by golden beaches\, tranquil seas\, lush verdant hills and lowland forests. One would have to search far and wide to find an island blessed with so much cultural as well as natural heritage. It is a true tropical paradise that offers something for everyone: from foodies\, history buffs and nature park enthusiasts to those just wanting to relax on a sun-drenched beach. \nGeorge Town\nCombine three distinct and ancient cultures\, indigenous and colonial architecture\, shake for a few centuries\, and garnish with some of the best food in Southeast Asia\, and you’ve got the irresistible urban cocktail that is George Town. With a long and illustrious history under its belt\, Penang’s capital city is one of the most interesting and colourful cities in Malaysia. Named after King George III\, walking down the streets of George Town is like walking through the paths of history. \nThe beauty and rich history of George Town keeps tourists flocking all year round. It offers views of the famous Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion\, Kapitan Keling Mosque and many of the capital’s golden crowned Buddhist temples\, and museums showcasing the country’s rich-historical treasures\, as well as restaurants that offer classic Malaysian cuisine and dozens of shopping malls.  As acknowledgment of its well-preserved cultural and historical heritage\, the city was listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO on the 7th of July 2008. \n  \nThe Habitat at Penang Hill\nWith world-class facilities\, dramatic natural beauty\, and a commitment to conservation and environmental awareness\, The Habitat on Penang Hill is the place to visit for the most complete\, exciting and educational Malaysian rainforest experience. When you walk through the gates of The Habitat you enter a magical natural kingdom of genuine beauty.  Rolling hills\, pristine rain forest\, lush flora\, enormous granite boulders and distant views make The Habitat on Penang Hill a must-see attraction. This world-class ecotourism site\, the first of its kind in Malaysia\, aims to promote environmental consciousness and conservation awareness tourism.  Learn more at www.thehabitat.my \nConference Agenda\nThis is a very general outline. Details will be posted as they become available. \nAbout TIAA Conferences \nEach year\, TIAA produces two professional development conferences for TIAA members\, Thunderbird alumni and friends and family of TIAA members\, as well as the occasional guest. These premium experiences feature high-caliber speakers exploring current trends in global trade\, as well as professional networking opportunities that are uniquely Thunderbird.  Locations rotate around the globe. Past sites have included Baden Baden\, Budapest\, Mexico City\, New York\, Nanjing\, Paris\, Panamá and Washington D.C. \n\nREGISTER – CLICK HERE

SUMMARY:Update On Malaysia's Renewable Energy Framework
DESCRIPTION:With the Feed-in Tariff (FiT) for Solar PV coming to an end\, the Sustainable Energy Development Authority (SEDA) Malaysia\, together with Malaysia Energy Commission\, has rolled out the net energy metering (NEM) scheme for the corporate sector\, an incentive by the government to promote the growth of renewable energy (RE) in the country. Companies in Malaysia not only can now self- generate renewable energy from onsite solar PV systems but NEM allows them to sell the potential excess energy back to the grid. This means corporate consumers can contribute to clean energy production and at the same time reduce their cost base\, solar PV being today significantly cheaper than grid energy in Malaysia. \nAMCHAM invites you to join the breakfast briefing session on Tuesday\, Sep 18 from 9.00am – 11.00am at the AMCHAM Executive Office with Cleantech Solar as they share case studies of companies like Coca-Cola\, Kellogg\, Cognizant and Becton Dickinson adopting solar-as-a-service in Malaysia as well as in the wider Asia region and find out how the new Malaysia framework can benefit your operations. \nThis program is recommended for Head of Operations\, Facilities\, Energy Procurement\, Sustainability and Senior Leadership in the company to find out how the new Malaysia framework and adopting solar-as-a-service at no upfront capital can benefit an existing business operation in the Food & Beverage\, Dairy\, Pharma\, Biotech and General Manufacturing industry. \nSeats are complimentary and available to the first 20 registrations received. SUMMARY:Penang Dialogue 2018 - Penang’s Competitive Edge: Developing Talent for the Digital Age
DESCRIPTION:Join AMCHAM at our annual Penang Dialogue on September 4\, 2018 from 9.00 a.m. to 1.45 p.m. at the Eastern & Oriental Hotel. \nThe Penang Dialogue is a half-day signature program that brings together AMCHAM members with key stakeholders in local government\, academia and civil society to discuss core themes related to doing business in Malaysia’s Northern Region. \nThis year we are focusing on the priority area of talent. \nPenang and surrounding areas have for decades been at the forefront of Malaysia’s industrial development\, welcoming global MNCs from the U.S. and elsewhere that have helped to drive Malaysia up the value chain. The advent of evermore sophisticated automation and A.I. presents great opportunities for Penang\, yet also comes with challenges. Penang-based companies need access to a highly-skilled and adaptable workforce to harness these new technologies\, and talent development will be perhaps the single most important criteria for the continued prosperity of the region. Preparing the workforce to thrive over the coming decades requires a long-term holistic approach with strong levels of collaboration between the private\, public\, academic and civil society sectors\, and this forum will welcome senior speakers from each of these spheres to share some of the latest developments and opportunities in this key area. \nAMCHAM is delighted to announce that Y.A.B. Chow Kon Yeow\, the new Chief Minister of Penang\, will deliver a keynote address as well as The Honorable Kamala Shirin Lakhdhir\, U.S. Ambassador to Malaysia. \nDue to overwhelming response each year\, we would encourage you to register early to avoid disappointment as we are unable to accommodate last minute requests. \nKindly contact Ms. Elyna Ngu at elyna@amcham.com.my for event sponsorship and corporate tables. We look forward to seeing you in Penang!

SUMMARY:US Tax Reform (Penang)
DESCRIPTION:The US Congress has approved and the US President has signed into law a massive tax reform package. This moves the US toward a participation exemption-style system for taxing foreign-sourced income of domestic multinational corporations\, with some of the cost of that tax relief offset by provisions that scale back or eliminate many longstanding deductions\, credits\, and incentives for businesses and individuals. The impact of these changes could be significant to global multinational companies operating in or trading with US and may influence strategic decision makings. \nAMCHAM is delighted to have three tax experts from Deloitte to help address and highlight key areas that are relevant to U.S. companies based in Penang\, on Wednesday\, July 18 from 1.50 p.m. to 4.30 p.m. at the Hotel Equatorial Penang. \nThis is a sharing session of what companies need to be cognizant about. Seminar outline: \n· Global Tax Perspectives & Trends \n– A World of Change \n– Industry Lens (What / How / When) \n· U.S. Tax Reform – Value Chain Impact \n– Risks and Opportunities \n– Local Jurisdiction Considerations \nSeats are limited to two persons per company\, on a first-come first-served basis and coffee/tea will be served. The ticket price is now priced slightly more to cover the costs of holding the program in a larger space. \nFor more details\, please contact Elyna at elyna@amcham.com.my
