SUMMARY:Place of Business: Tax Guidelines
DESCRIPTION:Join us in this important webinar featuring Deloitte and KPMG where they will share their thoughts on the latest development of “Place of Business” (POB)\, and profit attribution exercise. \nThe introduction of Sections 12(3) and 12(4) of the Malaysian Income Tax Act 1967 (the Act)\, effective from 28 December 2018\, provides more certainty in assessing whether the business profits of a non-resident that is from a non-treaty country (e.g. US\, Jersey etc.) would fall within the Malaysian income tax net. However\, there are several grey areas in the law itself and as such\, the issuance of the Guidelines on the Application of Subsections 12(3) and 12(4) of the Income Tax Act 1967 in Determining a “Place of Business” are useful as they alleviate a number of uncertainties. \nWith this\, certain operations carried on in Malaysia by non-residents from non-treaty countries may constitute Place of Business (POB) in Malaysia because of the rules/guidelines that result in: \n\nCertain activities are no longer considered preparatory or auxiliary when the overall nature of the business is considered;\nThe expansion of the agency POB definition such that sales/ marketing activities without contract conclusion may nevertheless trigger a POB\nFragmented activities or contracts being aggregated when considering whether a POB exists\nBuilding site\, construction\, installation\, assembly project and related supervisory activities exceeding 5 months in in aggregate in any 12-month period would trigger a POB\n\nWhere there is POB in Malaysia\, the profits attributable to the POB in Malaysia shall be deemed derived from Malaysia and is subject to Malaysian income tax. The challenging issue here is the profit attribution for the Malaysian operations of the NR\, which is complex and often subject to dispute. We expect the MIRB to issue separate guidelines on profit attribution to the POB in due course. \nWith the latest development\, MNCs from the US and other non-treaty countries should revisit their existing and proposed modus operandi in Malaysia with a view to assessing the implications and the way forward. \nEVENT DETAILS \nDate: Wednesday\,1 July 2020 \nTime: 11:00 am – 12:30 pm \nPlatform: Webinar powered by CISCO Webex Events \nTICKETS \nThis event is free to registered AMCHAM Members. SUMMARY:2020 Cyber Smart Index and The Importance of Cyber Security Right Now
DESCRIPTION:“The COVID-19 pandemic is likely to increase the importance of cyber security. The likelihood and impact of cyber risks is increased with remote and mobile working”. \nBusinesses that embrace the concept of digital transformation perform better. Yet\, three in five businesses in the Asia Pacific region (APAC) have put off digitisation out of fear of cyber-attacks. The challenge for both businesses and governments is to make sure that they are protected and prepared\, even more now than ever before. Technology is enabling many businesses to allow employees to work from home\, technology is empowering students with remote learning and securing IT in health systems. Digital business focuses more on how technology allows companies and people to create new value and experiences that differentiate them and give them a competitive edge over their peers. \nAgainst this backdrop\, Deloitte Access Economics and VMware have launched a new report\, “Cyber Smart – Enabling APAC businesses”. In this report\, Deloitte Access Economics analyses cyber exposure\, preparedness and economic opportunity across 12 economies in APAC. Singapore ranks #1. This research finds that improving preparedness could increase APAC GDP by US$145 billion in the long term and spur the growth of what is already a US$22 billion industry. \nLooking at government frameworks and organisational capability across the region\, the report finds that nations with higher exposure to cyber risks tend to be more prepared. More developed economies are the most exposed. But with an average index score of 56 out of a best practice of 100\, APAC’s preparedness must improve. Clearly\, governments have the appetite to support cyber smarts. However\, businesses should adopt best practices\, and act today to better prepare for cyber risks\, and capture the benefits of digital in the future. \nThis AMCHAM Webinar will bring stakeholders together to share key findings from the report and learnings on the importance of cyber security. This webinar will drive a constructive conversation that protects everyone online via appropriate policies and legislation – from basic cyber hygiene principles to how governments and businesses can become more cyber smart. \nJoin industry experts from Carbon Black\, Deloitte and VMware to discuss why cyber security is especially important now. \nEVENT DETAILS \nDate: Tuesday\, 2 June 2020 \nTime: 3:00pm – 4:00pm \nLocation: Webinar powered by CISCO Webex Teams \nIf you are a non-member and wish to participate\, please drop us an email at events@amcham.com.my for more information. \n  \nREGISTRATION INFORMATION \n\nPlease note only REGISTERED participants will receive the webinar joining instructions via their respective registered email address\,24 hours prior to the scheduled session.\nKindly lookout for a Pre Event Information email from our Events team via events@amcham.com.my.\nIf you are registering on behalf of a colleague\, kindly ensure their email address is correctly captured to ensure they receive all necessary updates.

SUMMARY:Economic Outlook: Understanding the Impact of COVID-19 on the Economy
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we host a special presentation by the Group Chief Economist/Head of Research of AmBank who will dive into the current economic impact of COVID-19 in Malaysia. \nFollowing the trade war between the US and China in 2019\, the world today is being hit by the COVID-19 pandemic. It has disrupted global supply chain\, dragged global demand down and a surge in job losses\, all within a short span of few months\, as opposed to the 2008 Global Financial Crisis. Malaysia\, being a trading nation\, is also being impacted from this virus pandemic. Just like the global economy which will be in recession\, probably the worst since the 1930s\, the domestic economy is also expected to be in recession in 2020. \nUnderpinned by the current challenging environment which remains uncertain as well as unpredictable\, the downside risk on the economy remains high. To worsen\, is the domestic challenges. Hence\, relief measures have been introduced with the RM260 billion stimulus package\, and now heading for recovery and reforms. What will be the new normal after COVID-19 be? Should the economy be overzealous with GDP growth targets? Will there be a change to the trade dynamics? \nEVENT DETAILS \nDate: Friday\, 15 May 2020 \nTime: 2:30 – 4:00pm \nLocation: Webinar powered by Cisco Webex Meetings \nThis is a Member and Member Company only event. Kindly register to gain access. \nREGISTRATION INFORMATION: \n\nPlease note only REGISTERED participants will receive the webinar joining instructions via their respective registered email address\,24 hours prior to the scheduled session.\nKindly lookout for a Pre Event Information email from our Events team via events@amcham.com.my.\nIf you are registering on behalf of a colleague\, kindly ensure their email address is correctly captured to ensure they receive all necessary updates.\n\nFor more information\, please contact us at events@amcham.com.my

SUMMARY:Data Detectives - The Urgency of Data-Driven Marketing
DESCRIPTION:AMCHAM invites you to join this interactive session lead by the The Tenth Floor to understand the role that data analytics could play in assisting companies with navigating through “new normal” business operations as we enter into the recovery and realignment phase. \nBusinesses must lay the groundwork for recoveries sooner rather than later as post pandemic ad-hoc responses won’t be enough. In the digital space\, protecting brand assets and commanding a brand premium will be a challenge. In this webinar\, we will demonstrate how to leverage open-source data for behavioural insights and test hypotheses to improve business performance at a much lesser time and cost. This is particularly useful for organisations that are multi-market with an interest to grow without geographical and operational constraints. \nThis session will cover: \n\nData Detectives: five steps hands-on process to deliver measurable results\nEmerging power of open source: Mastercard and Nestle case study\nFuture of insights: freedom from large budgets and slow insights\nNext in e-commerce: protecting brand equity and pricing\nMaking the most of your internal data: how did Intel do it\n\nTARGET AUDIENCE: \nCEO | Marketing leaders | Analysts | E-commerce and CRM heads \nEVENT DETAILS: \nDate: Thursday\, 14 May 2020 \nTime: 2:00pm – 3:00pm \nLocation: Webinar powered by CISCO Webex Meetings \nREGISTRATION INFORMATION: \n\nPlease note only REGISTERED participants will receive the webinar joining instructions via their respective registered email address\,24 hours prior to the scheduled session.\nKindly lookout for a Pre Event Information email from our Events team via events@amcham.com.my.\nIf you are registering on behalf of a colleague\, kindly ensure their email address is correctly captured to ensure they receive all necessary updates.
