How Malaysia Became The First – A Starbucks Story

“It was amazing to learn more about D&I (diversity & inclusion) initiatives here in Malaysia. Heart-warming and inspiring to say the least” – Dr. Rohini Kamalanathan Van Hoboken, Senior Director – Industrial Health & Wellness, Asia at Western Digital (M) Sdn Bhd

Starbucks Malaysia opened its first-of-a-kind store in 2016 which set precedent for Starbucks worldwide. The Signing Store, located in Bangsar Village II, gained global attention for its unique set up which inspired other Starbucks around the world to follow. Late in 2018, the U.S. opened its first signing store in Washington D.C.

On January 22, Rina Siew, CSR Manager of Berjaya Starbucks Coffee Company who was involved in the entire process, shared her journey and that of the company’s. It was a fulfilling experience, having to learn a new language & discovering a whole new world filled with opportunities for the deaf community.

AMCHAM Corporate Citizenship Committee had 50 members and guests attend this afternoon session. One attendee commented that it was “a great opportunity to share and [the] initiative so profound and impactful. It gives ideas for companies to incorporate social responsibility into its corporate strategy and culture”

We would like to thank Rina Siew for sharing the signing store journey with us. Send an email to csr@amcham.com.my to find out how you or your company can get involved in the new Committee.
