On February 16, 2017 AMCHAM, led by Datuk Tim Garland accompanied with some member, met with Prime Minister YAB Dato’ Sri Mohd Najib Tun Abdul Razak. The group were able to raise some critical concerns impacting many sectors in our membership as a result of a recent set of rulings including the new Withholding Tax (WHT), Goods & Services Tax (GST), and Foreign Exchange Administration (FEA) rules and their impact to Malaysia as a whole.
This meeting took place as a result of work done by the Chamber and its members starting in December. AMCHAM actively engaged with various ministries and agencies (MITI, MoF, MIDA, etc.) highlighting specific concerns that a number of our members cited as presenting adverse reactions locally and by their HQs; this was especially vigorous around to the implementation of WHT which went into effect on January 17, 2017.
Since then, almost every week, AMCHAM has been actively meeting with the relevant agencies and, on February 22, 2017, AMCHAM met with the Governor and Chairman of Bank Negara Malaysia and Y.B Datuk Seri Johari bin Abdul Ghani, Finance Minister II - a meeting chaired by Y.B. Dato' Sri Mustapa Bin Mohamed, Minister of International Trade and Industry, with Muhammad bin Ibrahim. Discussions are still ongoing and we are very grateful for the Malaysian government for their willingness to listen to the concerns of American business community as companies seek to ensure Malaysia remains an important part of the global supply chain. We are also very grateful to the commitment of our members in sharing time and information so that we represent the membership well as a whole.
