2015 AMCHAM-MACEE Scholarship Award U.S. Higher Education becomes a reality for the 15th Deserving Scholar

Kuala Lumpur, June 9, 2015– The American Malaysian Chamber of Commerce (AMCHAM), in joint effort with the Malaysian-American Commission on Education Exchange (MACEE), is pleased to announce the winner of the 2015 AMCHAM-MACEE Scholarship Award, Ms. Vanneeda Keowmang. The Award is presented today at AMCHAM Executive office by Kent Stiegler, Acting Deputy Chief of Mission, U.S. Embassy Kuala Lumpur, Mr. Sanjeev Nanavati, AMCHAM President an Dr. James Coffman, Executive Director of MACEE. This year, Etihad Airways has also generously provided a return airfare to New York to the winning scholar, presented by Mr. Dave Walsh, General Manager of Etihad Airways. Also present at the event today include AMCHAM Board of Governors and Ms. Keowmang’s family members.

Ms. Keowmang was selected from a list of extremely competitive candidates recommended by Malaysian American Commission on Educational Exchange (MACEE), appointed by AMCHAM to manage the scholarship application process. Ms. Keowmang is accepted to New York University and will be begin her first year in Liberal Studies and transfer into the Kanbar Institute of Film and Television in the Tisch School of the Arts. Etihad Airways will be sponsoring her round-trip flight route from Kuala Lumpur to New York.

"My dream of pursuing film was and is an expensive one, something I didn't think I could afford. Even with my financial aid package, NYU is still extremely expensive. Not many scholarships cater towards people like me who are looking to be in the creative and performing arts, and the AMCHAM-MACEE Scholarship came as great help. I am so thankful for AMCHAM, MACEE, my parents who support me and my university counsellor, Miss Abigail Ferrari. I hope to be able to achieve great things and make my country proud", Vanneeda exerted.

The scholarship endowment program, created by AMCHAM in 2001 intended to benefit deserving Malaysian students planning to pursue their undergraduate studies in the United States. The collaboration of the AMCHAM-MACEE Scholarship awards a US$20,000 scholarship, covering four years of undergraduate study in the United States. The scholarship is made possible by the generous donations of the corporate members as well as from the special charity events organized by AMCHAM.

"We wish Ms‎ Keowmang every success with her studies in the USA. May Etihad Airways' support help her realise her film-making dreams."

Marking its 15th anniversary, the AMCHAM-MACEE Scholarship has awarded student grants totalling up to $300,000. Every year, MACEE receives applications from many qualified students. From there, a few applicants are shortlisted and are interviewed by MACEE and the AMCHAM’s Board of Governors. A winner will be selected upon the completion of the interview process. Candidates are judged on academic performance, leadership ability, and financial need. This year’s recipient, Vanneeda advanced by showcasing her maturity and steadfast personality as she seeks to branch out into the liberal arts faculty whilst encouraging artistic creativity. AMCHAM in conjunction with MACEE are both pleased to announce Ms. Vanneeda Keowmang as the 2015 AMCHAM-MACEE Scholar.
